Marvelous Antique Volkstedt Shower/Trumpet Vase!
Marvelous Antique Volkstedt Shower/Trumpet Vase!
Click for large / detail photos
An absolutely fabulous work of art from one of the earliest German porcelain makers that led up to the famous Dresden pieces. Marked with the logo of Triebner, Ens and Eckert, Volkstedt Germany, ca. 1890. The unusual piece has a dual vase-in-a-vase, two-tiered design, with 3 'pocket-vases' spaced out around the base.
Attached between the pocket vases are porcelain roses and their thorny branches, with a small songbird perched above the foliage on the 'frontside'. The piece is 10 inches tall, with both of the flaring trumpet vases having 4-½ inch wide rims. The three pocket vases have oval-shaped rims, which are approx. 1-¾ inches wide.
There are some missing branch tips and petal pieces, here & there, but for the most part, they are not very obvious. One flaw to point out is the missing, ¼-inch wingtip of the bird. Please view all of the detailed photos, especially the closeup photos, which may reveal damage that tends to "blend in", even when viewed in person. It is a
busy
piece and any flaws are definitely not what is first noticed.
Another flaw that needs to be mentioned is a hairline that runs across from one pocket vase to another pocket vase. It can be seen in the #6 detailed photo, just above the rose. It appears to be original to the making and also appears to be stable.
Those jagged rim edges could easily hide any damage, so they have been checked with a 3X magnifying glass! There are a few very tiny chips that are quite difficult to even
find
and they're only visible upon very close inspection.
It is a lovely thing to behold, in spite of the numerous bits of minor damage, and it can definitely lay claim to being one of only a few, or even less, that exist today.
