Carved Bakelite Scottie/Westie/Yorkie Jewelry Pin - Brooch
Carved Bakelite Scottie/Westie/Yorkie Jewelry Pin - Brooch
Click for large / detail photos
A large piece of vintage costume jewelry, it measures approx. 3-½ inches from the front paw to the tail. The eyes, nose and tongue are hand-painted with a heavy covering of enamel paint. The metal backing plate is shaped to the dog's silhouette, with the Bakelite attached to it with glue and tiny screws.
The layer that comprises the dog's head is attached to the body with glue (that old-looking, yellowish kind). The right-most paw was broken off from the body and repaired with that same kind of glue to hold it to the metal backing. It appears that the manufacturer made the repair.
The metal doesn't test as silver and is stamped with this marking: AuSTriaG. The fastener is an old-style reinforced hinge, a two-piece pinstem and a very wide C-catch. Other than the paw, no damage is noted and any light areas seen on the tips are either wear of the finish or original to the design.
PLEASE NOTE: It is a thermoset plastic, although it cannot be tested to determine whether the material is Bakelite (aka Catalin) or galalith, without causing possible damage.
